About the archive
A public record, plainly kept.
This archive exists to gather, in one place, the historical documents bearing on the boundary between Sand Beach Reserve and the land claimed by the TownLake YMCA — and to let those documents speak for themselves.
Purpose
Let the documents carry the argument.
Most of this website simply lays out facts. The primary sources — patents, deeds, plats, surveys, ordinances, and reports — are posted with their dates in their names so anyone can examine them directly. The chronology, the conflict map, and the reading guide are there to orient readers, not to replace the underlying records.
The collection is being assembled from roughly five dozen historical documents. It will grow as those documents are digitized and posted.
Method
Three kinds of content, kept apart.
To keep fact and opinion from blurring, material on this site is marked as one of three kinds. Watch for these labels.
Interpretation
Conclusions drawn from the record — for example, the reversion argument — attributed to their author, not presented as adjudicated fact.
Present-day matters
The development concept and public response, which change over time and are kept on the current proposal page.
Authorship & responsibility
Most of the research here has been assembled by Joe Riddell, who takes personal responsibility for the content.
Riddell is an Austin attorney who worked, as an assistant attorney general for the state, on earlier litigation involving Sand Beach Reserve east of Lamar. He compiled the chronology, adapted the conflict map from William O'Hara's 1999 report, and gathered the source documents presented here.
Portions of this site that analyze documents or advocate positions or actions are attributed to their author or authors.
A note on the analysis
The boundary critique rests on O'Hara's surveyor's report; the reversion conclusion is Riddell's own. Both are offered so readers — and, where appropriate, public officials — can evaluate them against the primary record.

This archive aims to be accurate. If you can supply a missing document, a better copy of one already posted, or a correction to a date or description, it is welcome. Additional historical records that bear on the boundary — patents, plats, deeds, and survey reports — are especially useful.
